The festival commenced with a free opening day headlined by French indie-pop sensation Phoenix with an electrifying set that perfectly encapsulated their signature blend of indie pop and effervescent energy. The French band, headlining the opening night, performed a mix of timeless hits like ‘Lisztomania’ and ‘1901’ alongside fresh tracks from their latest album, Alpha Zulu. With his characteristic charm, Frontman Thomas Mars shared anecdotes about their long-standing relationship with the festival, adding a nostalgic touch to their vibrant performance. The seamless integration of classic favourites with new material kept the set dynamic and engaging, making Phoenix’s performance a joyful celebration of their musical journey and an exhilarating kickoff to the festival.

Friday night was electrified by Vampire Weekend, who seamlessly blended nostalgia with fresh energy. Under the Mediterranean sky, the band kicked off with the effervescent ‘A-Punk,’ instantly igniting the crowd. Their set was a rich tapestry of classics like ‘Oxford Comma’ and newer hits like ‘Harmony Hall,’ showcasing their evolution while maintaining their signature sound. Midway through ‘Cousins,’ news broke that Donald Trump had been found guilty on all counts, adding a surreal layer to the already euphoric atmosphere. Vampire Weekend’s performance was a jubilant celebration reaffirming their status as beloved indie icons.

Later on Friday, Peggy Gou delivered a mesmerising deep house set that entranced the audience. Performing against a backdrop of psychedelic visuals, Gou commanded the decks with a seamless blend of her signature soundscapes and tracks from her upcoming album. The surprise guest appearances elevated Spanish actor Aron Piper’s stage, adding a personal and intimate touch to her performance. Gou’s set was a night highlight, showcasing her ability to blend hypnotic beats with a captivating stage presence.

As the scorching sun bathed on Friday afternoon, Ethel Cain took to the stage, commanding the audience with an ethereal presence. The rising star, hailed as a future icon, delivered an intimate and expansive set. Songs from her critically acclaimed debut album Preacher’s Daughter reverberated through the crowd, each note heavy with emotion and storytelling. Tracks like ‘A House in Nebraska’ and ‘Thoroughfare’ were transformed into anthems, their typically subdued tones amplified by the passionate chorus of fans singing along. Ethel Cain’s performance was more than a concert; it was a communal experience, a shared journey through the landscapes of her haunting and beautiful narratives.

Omar Apollo’s set was a genre-blending and soulful performance masterclass. Known for his eclectic musical style that fuses R&B, pop, and Latin influences, Apollo delivered a captivating performance that showcased his versatility as an artist. He immediately captivated the crowd with his rich vocals and charismatic stage presence. Apollo’s set was a dynamic mix of genres, featuring tracks from his debut album Ivory and his latest work. Songs like ‘Evergreen’ and ‘Go Away’ highlighted his ability to seamlessly transition between heartfelt ballads and upbeat, danceable tracks. His skilful guitar work and engaging performance style added depth to each song, making his set a multi-faceted musical experience.

Lana Del Rey’s headlining performance was a profoundly immersive experience, transforming the festival grounds into a dreamlike realm with her hauntingly beautiful music. Performing against a backdrop of tall white columns and vintage-inspired visuals, Lana captivated the audience with her unique blend of melancholic melodies and cinematic stagecraft. Hits like ‘Video Games,’ ‘Born to Die,’ and ‘Young and Beautiful’ resonated through the crowd, each note carrying a palpable emotional weight. Lana’s set was a masterclass in creating a mood and drawing the audience into her world. The absence of her iconic motorcycle entrance from Coachella was a minor disappointment, but it did not detract from the overall impact of her performance. Reflecting on her deep connection with her European fans, she descended from the stage to greet the audience, adding a personal and heartfelt conclusion to a mesmerising set.

Troye Sivan triumphantly displayed his evolution as a pop artist. Fresh off the release of his new album Something to Give Each Other. He delivered a high-energy set that showcased his growth and versatility. Tracks like ‘Rush’ and ‘Got Me Started’ were brought to life with dynamic choreography and striking visuals, creating an infectious atmosphere that had the crowd dancing along. In a touching tribute to Madonna, Sivan’s outfit paid homage to her iconic lace look from the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards, blending elements of her famous Gaultier cone bra with his style. This nod to pop royalty underscored Sivan’s place in the pop pantheon, as he transitioned seamlessly from cult favourite to mainstream star, demonstrating his ability to connect deeply with his audience.

Saturday night saw The National deliver a masterful performance that balanced introspection and grandeur. Known for its deeply emotional and atmospheric sound, The National captivated the audience with a setlist that blended iconic hits with deeper cuts. They set a contemplative tone, drawing the crowd into their world of lush, melancholic rock. Frontman Matt Berninger’s deep, resonant vocals were at the forefront, conveying a raw emotional intensity. Songs like ‘Bloodbuzz Ohio’ and ‘Fake Empire’ were met with vigorous applause, each note and lyric striking a chord with the audience. The band’s synergy was evident, and their performance was a seamless blend of intricate instrumentals and heartfelt vocals.

Electronic duo Disclosure turned the Parc del Fòrum into a pulsating dance floor on Friday night. Their set, featuring tracks from their album Energy, was a masterclass in live electronic music. Disclosure seamlessly blended newer tracks with fan favourites like ‘Latch’ and ‘Omen,’ keeping the crowd dancing and energized late into the night. The duo’s infectious beats and high-energy performance demonstrated why they remain a leading force in the electronic music scene.

Mushkaa, known for her eclectic mix of R&B and contemporary pop, brought a refreshing and vibrant energy to Primavera Sound 2024. She captivated the audience with her engaging stage presence and infectious rhythms. Her set featured upbeat tracks and soulful ballads, showcasing her versatility as an artist. Songs like ‘Feel Alright’ and ‘All Night’ resonated with the audience, their catchy melodies and relatable lyrics creating an instant connection. Mushkaa’s ability to blend different genres seamlessly made her performance a standout at the festival.

Arca’s late-night set was a sensory explosion, combining avant-garde visuals with powerful vocal performances. Known for her genre-defying approach, Arca’s show was a thrilling blend of experimental sounds and provocative stage presence. Using a smoke cannon and industrial beats, she created a challenging and exhilarating immersive experience. Her ability to push boundaries and captivate the audience with her innovative soundscapes made her performance one of the festival’s most memorable.

Royel Otis provided a refreshing and dreamy interlude amidst the festival’s diverse lineup. The Sydney-based duo, known for their sun-soaked indie pop, brought a relaxed and captivating set that perfectly matched the festival’s seaside setting. Their music, characterised by jangly guitars and catchy melodies, created a warm and inviting atmosphere. Tracks like ‘Without You’ and ‘Only One’ showcased their knack for crafting infectious tunes that linger in the mind. The duo’s easygoing stage presence and genuine connection with the crowd added to the charm of their performance, making it feel like a casual gathering of friends by the sea.

PJ Harvey’s performance was nothing short of a poignant, atmospheric journey. Taking the stage on Saturday night, her set became an emotional focal point of the festival, amplified by a torrential downpour that added to the moment’s gravity. The rain fell in sheets, creating a dramatic backdrop for Harvey’s haunting melodies and raw, powerful presence. With her signature blend of intensity and vulnerability, Harvey’s set was a masterclass in evoking emotion through music. She performed various tracks from her illustrious career, including highlights from her critically acclaimed albums To Bring You My Love and Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea. Songs like ‘Down by the Water’ and ‘Good Fortune’ resonated deeply with the soaked but steadfast crowd undeterred by the weather.

Electra’s ability to push boundaries and challenge norms made their performance a standout at the festival, celebrating individuality and creativity. Known for their genre-defying music and provocative stage presence, Electra delivered a visually and sonically striking set. Kicking off with ‘Flamboyant,’ they immediately commanded the audience’s attention with their dynamic performance and bold fashion choices. Electra’s set included high-energy tracks and introspective songs, each delivered with their characteristic flair. Hits like’Career Boy’ and ‘My Agenda’ were highlights, blending catchy pop melodies with thought-provoking lyrics.

Known for her ability to convey complex feelings through her music, Mitski delivered a haunting and profoundly moving set. Performing tracks from her latest album, The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We, she captivated the audience with her introspective lyrics and haunting melodies. Each song was performed with a raw emotional intensity that resonated deeply with the crowd. Highlights included ‘The Only Heartbreaker’ and ‘Stay Soft,’ where Mitski’s vocal delivery and poignant lyrics created an almost tangible connection with the audience.

SZA’s headlining set on Saturday was a powerful showcase of contemporary R&B. She effortlessly wove through tracks from her acclaimed albums Ctrl and SOS. Hits like ‘Kill Bill’ and ‘All the Stars’ electrified stage presence with impeccable vocals that resonated deeply with the audience. “I’m feeling all the love,” SZA told the crowd, marking her first performance in Spain with a heartfelt connection. Her ability to convey deep emotion through her music made her set a standout moment of the festival.

Japanese girl group Atarashii Gakko! brought a unique and spirited performance to Primavera Sound. Their set was a whirlwind of quirky choreography and eclectic sounds, blending J-pop with rock elements. The group’s playful energy and dynamic stage antics captivated the audience, making them a delightful addition to the lineup. Their innovative approach and infectious enthusiasm created a memorable experience for festival-goers, highlighting the diverse musical offerings of Primavera Sound.

The former Moloko frontwoman turned solo star transformed the night into a vibrant celebration of music and dance. Murphy’s set was a seamless blend of classic disco and contemporary electronic elements, creating a party atmosphere that was both nostalgic and forward-looking. Tracks like ‘Overpowered’ and ‘Something More’ were met with enthusiastic cheers, each song delivered with the flair and charisma that has become her trademark. Her stage presence was magnetic, and her movements and interactions with the audience added to the electric vibe of her performance.

Charli XCX’s late-night set was a burst of relentless energy and bold style. Diving into her ‘rave era’ with tracks from her upcoming album Brat, she electrified the crowd with high-octane performances of ‘b2b’ and ‘Von Dutch,’ alongside her frenetic remix of Caroline Polachek’s ‘Welcome to My Island.’ Her performance was a celebration of electronic pop and an exhilarating festival highlight.

Primavera Sound took a moment to honour the late Steve Albini, a festival stalwart for many years. Following his passing weeks before the event, the festival renamed a stage in his honour and hosted a listening party for Shellac’s new album To All Trains. PJ Harvey dedicated her haunting performance of ‘The Desperate Kingdom of Love’ to Albini, reflecting on their deep connection. During their set, Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker also paid tribute, reminiscing about Albini’s influence and legacy. The tributes were a poignant reminder of Albini’s enduring impact on the music world and Primavera Sound.

As a first-time attendee, I found the festival’s blend of great music, stunning location, and thoughtful organisation exceptional. Primavera Sound 2024 was not just about the stellar lineup; it was a holistic experience rooted in sustainability and comfort. The festival’s eco-friendly initiatives were evident, from electric vehicles on-site to stages powered by renewable energy. The ban on single-use plastics and numerous water refill stations highlighted Primavera’s environmental commitment.

The food offerings were as eclectic as the music, with global culinary delights ranging from gourmet burgers and fresh seafood paella to vegan specialities. Unlike many UK festivals, the prices were reasonable, making the gastronomic journey enjoyable and affordable.

Primavera Sound excelled in ensuring audience comfort and enjoyment. Unlike many chaotic significant festivals, it maintained a relaxed atmosphere. The organisers strategically placed the stages for optimal views and sound quality, even from a distance. With music starting at 4:30 p.m., attendees had the chance to explore Barcelona during the day and enjoy extended festival hours into the night, some sets lasting until 6 a.m., seamlessly blending nightlife and festival energy.

Held from May 30th to June 1st at Parc del Fòrum, the festival’s idyllic Mediterranean setting created a perfect backdrop for communal celebration. Welcoming over 193,000 attendees from around the globe, Primavera Sound 2024 embodied the essence of diverse music and cultural enjoyment.
